Details of Smithy Lane history will be added here, including the ordering of the cottage numbers – outline here. There are five in the row in the first picture, numbered 160 to 164. See also the details for the Eastlands Farm / Wheatfield dwelling.

A series of eight maps from around 1850 to 1970 help to show how the layout has changed over the years – it can be found here.

The entries for the cottages in the 1918 auction were as follows – noted on the plan below them in the lot numbers and colours indicated:

Lot 52 Smithy Lane Cottages
Lawford Village Zoom Centre

In the article which captured Ron Hence’s recollections about the village – written in 2002 – he recalls the layout in Smithy Lane, where he lived in “Long Cottage” in the later years of his life. He also has a special memory of the cottage set back from the road on the corner of the Lane and School Street – see here for details.
