Electoral Register Equality 1928

In 1928 the Representation of the People Act extended the vote to all women over 21. An earlier change in 1918 had included all men over 21 and most women over 30.

Electoral Rolls were thus updated to reflect this change.

Electoral Registers had been introduced in 1832, and there had been a distinction in the right to vote in local versus national elections with focus being on male ratepayers. From 1869 women ratepayers began to have the right to vote in local elections, and by 1884 those paying rent of at least £10 per year were added to the electoral register (although only one person per household).

1924 and 1931 samples of the registers from those periods are shown below to illustrate this change. The British Library holds a reasonably complete set of Electoral Registers, including a full set from 1947 onwards.

There is also a register held by the Parish to reflect those entitled to vote in church matters. An archived version of this, originally compiled in 1927, and maintained until 1960, is held at the Warwick Records Office.
