Keith Sinfield in his 2014 Village Newsletter history of Church Lawford notes that from the sale map of 1918 where particular businesses were located: ‘The Smithy’, at the bottom of what we now know as Smithy Lane; ‘The White Lion Inn’, occupying the same site as the present ‘The Old Smithy’ public house; Butcher’s Premises’, a combined butcher’s shop and slaughterhouse, situated in Church Road; ‘Wheelwright’s Premises’, at the triangle on Rugby Road, top of School St., more recently the site of the ‘Triangle Garage’, (the last village Blacksmith, Alf Day, later carried on his business nearby in School St) and, across the main road on a narrow strip of land, a ‘Grocer’s Business’, which also appears to have been the site of the post office.
Church Lawford Village Lots are detailed here – see the related pages for other lots
Church Lawford Farm Lots (with details of Fir Tree Farm Smallholding(Lot 24))
The six columns on the right show the acreage in the first three columns – in units of acres, roods and perches. The rental charges are shown in the second three (pounds, shillings and pence).
The lots were detailed in the coloured map below
Note that the areas left white in the area around the rectory and straddling the railway line are Glebe Land (belonging to the Church). The following chart aims to help in locating which cottages were in which lots. It is subject to review. It uses “modern” street names to help locating these properties – but these did not come into official use for over 30 years. Note that there were no properties where “Kings Newnham Road” or “Coronation Road” are now – nor in any of the newer roads. It incorporates the listed occupants prior to the auction. See the 1921 census page for updates on occupancy following the sale. Further details on Cottage Numbering can be found here.
