Rugby Borough was created on 1st April 1974 when the existing Town council was merged with Rugby Rural District, which had looked after the affairs of the local villages for 80 years.

It inherited control of all of the various services previous provided by the individual councils – see here for the details of how RRDC provided those services for Church Lawford and King’s Newnham.

Any longer term benefits of this merger will be seen in the future, but it has allowed the rural areas to have some visibility on wider affairs, perhaps shown by a local person – Sally Bragg – becoming Mayor of the Borough for the defined term in 2016. The Town Hall next to Caldecote Park became the base for the combined Borough, having been established in 1961 as the home of the Town Council.
