The Wake festival (also known as The Wakes) was an ancient event which survived into the 20th century. It coincided with the patron saint day of a parish church – so in St Peter’s case it began on the first Sunday after June 29th, and event continued through the following week. Two extracts from village magazines of 1897 are below, highlighting the differences in the celebrations in the two villages. (Mrs Oliver was the publican of the White Lion).

The Wake Festival continued for many years – the report below is for the 1937 Festival, which was held shortly after the Coronation of George VI.
