The Village Directory in 1959 was the last one to be published with the “old” cottage numbering approach, although references to “School St” were used ahead of “King’s Newnham Road” or a full adoption of “Church Rd – see here for details of the change. In fact it was rather a composite affair, with some old numbers and some new ones. Obvious oddities are in Coronation Road, with some of the old Pleasant View numbers still used. Additionally, it was seen as looking backwards, given the information would have been supplied the previous year, and may have been compiled a while before it was supplied – and indeed recent reviews have confirmed that fact.
The story at the top about President Garfield is still unproven, and examination of the book in question does not seem to shed any further light on the possibility.
The King’s Newnham directory includes the 6 new Council houses built in the inter-war period in Newnham Lane which are often seen as part of Bretford, but are inside the parish boundary. Nearby Willow Farm is also included in the parish.
